Continuing Education
Effective July 1, 2025
New LPG continuing education requirements
The Indiana governor and attorney general approved the following continuing education rules and fees for professional geologists that will go into effect July 1, 2025:
- Three-year license renewals for Professional Geologists will be $300.00. All licenses due for renewal July 1, 2025 or after will be paid at the new fee. Any renewal payments made electronically or postmarked July 1, 2025 or after will be required to pay the new fee even if the renewal date was June 30, 2025 or earlier.
- All licensees will need to start accumulating 12 credit hours per year of continuing education credits for a total of 36 credit hours when renewing on or after July 1, 2025. Please note that the July 1 date is not a deadline for accruing those credits; it is the starting date. For example, a renewal that is due November 30, 2025 would be renewed with no CE credit hours. For the next three-year renewal period and beyond, the licensee will need to have earned 12 CE units each year for their renewal.
- A license will be marked invalid if a renewal fee is not paid by the due date. Late payments will carry a $150 late fee. There is no longer a two-year grace period.
- If the renewal fee is not paid within two hundred one (201) days after receiving a noncompliance certified letter, the licensee must reapply.
- In the coming months, the Indiana LPG website will contain additional information concerning FAQs, allowable classes, workshops, etc.
If you have any questions, please contact DeAnn Reinhart at inblpg@iu.edu or 812-855-7428.
Clarification of how the Continuing Education and new fees will work
No licensee will need to submit their CE hours until at least the July 2028 renewal period.
For licensees with a renewal date before July 1, 2025:
- The licensee will renew at the current rate of $150.00 by their renewal date.
- If not paid by the renewal date but before July 1, 2025, a late fee of $15.00 will be added for a total due of $165.00.
- If not paid by July 1, 2025, the fee increases to the new rate of $300.00 plus the late fee of $150.00 for a total due of $450.00.
- After July 1st, we will start mailing out Past Due notices by certified mail and licensees will have 201 days from the date they receive the notice to pay the $450.00 fee.
- If not paid by the 201 days allowed, the license will expire.
- If an Indiana LPG license is needed after expiring, the former licensee must apply again as a new applicant. This now includes passing both portions of the ASBOG exams if not passed previously.
- When renewing in 2028, the licensee will be billed at the new rate of $300.00. • It is at this time the licensee must earn 12 CE hours per year for a total of 36 when renewing at their next three-year renewal period.
- If not paid by the due date, the $150.00 late fee will be added for a total due of $450.00.
- Licensees must have earned 36 CE hours when renewing in 2031.
For licensees with a renewal date of July 1, 2025 or after:
- The licensee will renew at the new rate of $300.00 by their renewal date.
- The licensee CANNOT pay for their renewal early at $150.00.
- It is at this time the licensee must earn 12 CE hours per year for a total of 36 when renewing in 2028.
- If not paid by the renewal date, a late fee of $150.00 will be added for a total due of $450.00.
- Past Due notices will be sent by certified mail and licensees will have 201 days from the date they receive the notice to pay the $450.00 fee.
- If not paid by the due date, the $150.00 late fee will be added for a total due of $450.00.
- Licensees must have earned 12 CE hours per year for a total of 36 when renewing in 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions: Continuing Education
All licensed professional geologists in Indiana must begin completing continuing education to maintain active status when they renew their license after June 30, 2025 [Public Law 108-2022]. Renewals prior to June 30, 2025, will begin completing continuing education at their next renewal period.
All licensed professional geologists must complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education each year of their three-year renewal period 305 IAC 1-6-2(a). An hour of continuing education consists of at least 50 minutes of instruction or course contact time 305 IAC 1-6-3(a) designed to enhance the licensed geologists’ knowledge and skills 305 IAC 1-6-6(a)(2). A minimum of one hour of professional ethics training must be obtained each year 305 IAC 1-6-2(a)(1).
The Board provides a variety of ways to obtain continuing education credit. The most common is to take a course from an approved organization IC 25-1-4-0.2; [305 IAC 1-6-6(a)(1)]. The Board recognizes CE activities with geological organizations affiliated with the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) and an organization that is a member of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI).
Continuing education credits can also be obtained by taking college courses. Ten hours of credit can be earned for each quarter credit hour, or fifteen hours of credit for each semester credit hour. 305 IAC 1-6-2(b).
Credit can be earned by teaching continuing education courses. Two credit hours are granted per hour of instruction. The two hours of credit are only for the first time the course is taught. 305 IAC 1-6-4.
Similarly, five credit hours can be obtained by authoring a peer-reviewed paper or book. 305 IAC 1-6-5(b).
Lastly, one continuing education credit can be earned for active participation in educational outreach programs about the geological profession to the public. 305 IAC 1-6-5(a).
The Board recognizes that ethics courses are limited. Consequently, ethics courses can be repeated during the three-year renewal period. Some options include:
- Texas Board of Professional Geologists – Ethics Options
- Midwest Geosciences Group – Ethics Courses
- Louisiana Board for Professional Geoscientists – Ethics Courses
- American Geosciences Institute – Online Courses
- International Association for Promoting Geoethic
If you are aware of educational opportunities that can be listed here, please e-mail specific information, including date, title, sponsoring organization, description, and website link if available to INBLPG@iu.edu.
The Board provides a worksheet to record the continuing education courses that you have taken. Besides this form, all LPGs must maintain documentation that provides proof of the training. These may be certificates, sponsor signatures, course outlines, and even payment receipts. Each CE event must have separate documentation. It is the obligation of the licensee to provide adequate documentation if requested by the Board. The Board will randomly select a number of licensees up for renewal for an audit.
Six credit hours earned but not used can be transferred to the first year of the next three-year renewal period. You will need to maintain documentation about this overage 305 IAC 1-6-2(c).
A three-year license renewal is $300 305 IAC 1-3-4(a). A license will be marked invalid if a renewal fee is not paid by the due date 305 IAC 1-3-4(c). Late payments will carry a $150 late fee, requiring a $450 renewal 305 IAC 1-3-4(c)(1). There is no longer a two-year grace period.
If the renewal fee is not paid within two hundred one (201) days after receiving a noncompliance certified letter, the licensee must reapply as a new applicant 305 IAC 1-3-4(d); 305 IAC 1-3-2. Note that LPGs grandfathered before the ASBOG exams were required will need to take the ASBOG exams.
